June 25th, 2008 Issue #003

Well, Summer's upon us - finally! Phew, it was a long winter here in the Pacific Northwest, with no sign of spring anywhere. So now that the temperature is climbing our thoughts turn to family gatherings and great pool parties.
With 4th of July right around the corner it's time to dust off the BBQ and sharpen up the grilling skills. And that means you'll need some great ideas for quick and easy cakes to star at these fabulous shindigs.
That's why I love cupcakes - they're perfect for summer when you don't want to spend all day in a hot kitchen. I think you'll really love the ideas this month! Have a great summer everyone.

BBQ Cakes

There's no better way to end a great summer BBQ than with some super cute Hamburger Cupcakes, Hot dog Cupcakes or one big hamburger cake. These are very simple and the kids (even the BIG kids!) will love them:

Hamburger Cupcakes

Top cupcakes with hamburgers made from a small chocolate cookie sandwiched between two Nilla wafers. Add a little lettuce made from green fruit roll-ups and a dash of raspberry jam ketchup and you're done!

Hot Dog Cupcakes

To make hot dog cupcakes just use a "circus peanut" candy (cut in half) for the bun. Roll a caramel candy into a sausage shape. Put the hot dog in the bun, top with a strips of red and yellow gummy candy for the condiments and there you have it!

One Big Hamburger cake

For one big hamburger cake - just sandwich a layer of chocolate cake between two layers of vanilla cake (frosted light brown). Add some green fruit roll-up 'lettuce', a circle or two of red fruit roll-up 'tomato' and a squirt of 'ketchup' and 'mustard' from some tubes of red and yellow decorators icing to fill out your burger. Sprinkle a few sesame seeds on top for some great extra detail and you're done. So easy!

Beach Party Cakes

Aaah. Nothing says summer like a beach party. And a summer party shouldn't find you slaving in a hot kitchen all day. Check out these cute cupcake ideas to get out of the kitchen in a flash and into the great outdoors where you belong:

Hawaiian Beach Cupcakes

For your next pool party why not top some cupcakes with hula girls under shady coconut palms. Sprinkle vanilla cookie crumb 'sand' on top of each cupcake. A pretzel stick topped with palm leaves made from melted green candy melts and cocoa puffs 'coconuts' makes a great shady palm tree. Add an adorable teddy graham hula girl adorned with grass skirt and flower lei made with frosting and #133 tip (grass tip) to complete the look.

Flip flop Cupcakes

Flip flops just scream summertime and they're super easy to re-create on a cupcake. Use a #234 tip (large grass tip) and lime green frosting to fill the top of each cupcake with wavy grass. Add colorful flip-flops made using candy melts. For this chocolate technique, follow the instructions for making chocolate butterflies, - found here. These adorable cupcakes will be the hit of any party.

Sports Parties

It just wouldn't be summer without a sports party and cupcakes are perfect for a sports theme. Think tennis, basketball and baseball among others.

Ball Sports Cupcakes

Frost cupcakes and use a real ball or a photo as your guide for piping the lines of stitching on to the cupcake 'ball'. You'll need yellow and white for a tennis ball, brick red and black for a basketball cupcake or white and red for a baseball cupcake. These are about as easy as it gets and really cute. If you would rather make one large cake, you can find step-by-step instructions for amazing sports cakes here .
