ACDC Flame Cake
by Kayla Thomason
(Wylie, Texas)
This cake includes 2 9" round pans. I used red velvet cake with a cream cheese filling and a buttercream frosting that I had dyed black.
For the flames and the ACDC logo I printed off a flame pattern and logo fit to the size of the cake.
I used a tye dye technique using red, orange, and yellow on the fondant. After rolling out the fondant, I covered it in plastic wrap to keep it from drying out. I laid the paper on the fondant and traced it then cut it out!!
Not bad for my first time to use fondant!
From the editor:
Kayla, that's fantastic for your first time using fondant!
Here's a few tips for this type of cake:
1. To avoid the after taste you can sometimes get when making black, or very dark colored, buttercream, start with chocolate buttercream and add just a little black gel paste color.
2. For a similar effect to Kayla's fondant flames:
free-hand cut or trace and cut out the flame shapes on yellow fondant. Paint on red and orange color to get a realistic flame effect. You can do this with powdered or gel paste food color mixed with a little vodka and a regular artists brush.
