Adding fillings to baked cake

How do I add a cream cheese filling to a baked cake? Can I just put it between the two layers of chocolate cake and then put on a cream cheese icing?

If you're using a recipe like this cream cheese filling, you just split the cake into layers and spread the filling in between, before topping with with your chosen frosting.
