To make handling easier, form the plane on a freezer-safe plate covered with a piece of wax paper.
1. cut a circle from the cake scraps, about 3" in diameter.
2. cut the circle in half, making two semi-circles, butter one side of each with frosting and stick them together.
3. to form the wings, cut two wedges from the cake scraps (about 2" wide x 1 1/2" long x 3/4" high) and stick one to each long side of the plane body with frosting.
4. to form the tail, cut a small triangle from the cake scraps (about 2" high) and stick to the back of the plane body with frosting.
5. cover the plane completely in white frosting and set in the freezer to firm up while you assemble the rest of the cake.
Assembly

1. divide the buttercream in to five bowls. Leave one white and tint the others light blue, medium blue, yellow and black.
2. place your cake(s) on a cake plate or board with at least 2” all around and secure with frosting.

4. using the white frosting and a Ziploc bag with a medium-large (about ½”) hole snipped in the corner, pipe a free-form, cloud-like squiggle around the base of the cake.
5. using more white frosting and a Ziploc bag with a small hole snipped in one corner, pipe some cloud shapes around the sides of the cake.
6. using the black frosting and a Ziploc bag wit h a small hole snipped in one corner, pipe some random seagulls amongst the clouds.
7. using the yellow frosting and a Ziploc bag with a small hole snipped in one corner, pipe a sun rising through the clouds at the base of the cake
8. place a dollop of frosting on top of the cake where you want the airplane to sit and gently slide him off the wax paper onto the frosting.

9. using the white frosting and a Ziploc bag with a medium hole snipped in one corner, pipe two eyeballs on the plane.
10. using the black frosting, pipe an outline all around the base of the plane and fill in some details for windows and facial details, as shown.
11. use the black frosting to pipe a birthday message around the top edge of the cake if you like.
You're done! Now go get a well deserved cup of coffee and sit back for a few minutes to admire your handiwork. Remember to take a picture while your masterpiece still looks perfect.
