airplane cake

hi! I want to make the airplane cake for my baby, he will turn 1 in December.

I work Saturdays, so if I bake the cakes on Friday and the birthday is Sunday morning. is that too early?

Also how many banana cakes do I need to bake? do I need three; two for the cake and one for cutting out the airplane?

I LOVE your site, thanks for posting all this great info!

From the editor:

Hi Isabelle and Santiago,

If you have to work the day before the party, I would recommend baking the cakes late on the third day before the party (Thursday night, in your case). This gives you time to cool the cakes, fill them and crumb coat then refrigerate overnight before decorating the following day. If you have time to do it in stages like this, it ensures a more successful outcome.

How many cakes depends on how many people you're serving. If you want to make an airplane cake identical to the one featured, it will serve 24-30 people and you'll need three 6" round cakes. That will require 1 1/2 times the Banana Cake recipe. Bake one of the cakes in an 8" pan and trim to 6". This will give you enough scraps to make the airplane from.

Good luck, and don't forget to come back and show off your cake when it's done.
