Any Ideas for a Tater Tot Cake?

by Jo
(Guthrie, Ok)

Don't ask me why, but I have been asked to make a cake to look like a big tater tot. Any suggestions on what to use on the outside of the cake.

From the editor:

Hi Jo,

Great question. I love a challenge. I had to think about this one for a while, but I think I have a solution for you:

Make your cake as a large cylinder shape and frost in light tan buttercream. To get the tater tot textured effect, cut up pound cake in random small pieces and place under a hot grill for a minute or so. Then stick the grilled pound cake pieces to the frosted cake, close together so there's no gaps in the frosting. I think this will give you a good approximation of tater tot texture, in the right scale for the cake.

To see what grilled pound cake looks like, check out the fries on this hamburger cake.

Good luck and don't forget to take lots of pictures so you can come back and share your cake with us.
