ingredients for the perfect baseball cake
- Cake - Choc Chip Pound Cake is a great choice
- Filling - Cookies & Cream Filling is perfect
- 1 batch of buttercream
- sky blue, yellow, red and brown gel food color
- Green candy melts
- Chocolate cookie crumbs
- Cake scraps left over from leveling layers
- ziploc sandwhich bags
- Plate or board to hold finished cake
first steps to a successful Baseball Cake
- bake the cakes and cool completely.
- level the cakes and split each into two layers horizontally.
- fill and assemble each cake on a separate cake circle
and secure with a dollop of frosting to stop it from sliding around.
- add a crumb coat - this is a very thin coat of un-tinted buttercream you apply to 'set' the crumbs.
- refrigerate the cake(s) while you make the Chocolate grass decorations.
making Chocolate Grass
- melt the candy melts in a microwave safe bowl for 30 seconds at a time, stirring after each interval, until completely melted.
- using the back of a spoon, smear some strips of melted chocolate about 1/8 inch thick on to a piece of wax paper, as shown (below left).
- let set for about 30 minutes then, using a large knife, cut randomly across the strip of chocolate to make small shards, as shown (below right). It’s that simple – now you have grass!

making The Baseball
- take the cake scraps you saved and smoosh them into an ice-cream scoop (very technical term!) to make each half of the ball.
- join the halves with frosting and frost the complete ball with white buttercream.
Baseball Cake assembly
- divide the buttercream in to four bowls, with about 1/2 cup in one and the rest split evenly.
- Tint the 1/2 cup bowl red and the others brown, medium green and leave one white.
- frost the top and of your Cake(s) with the Green frosting.
- Frost the sides of your cake(s) with Light Brown frosting.
- place your Baseball Cake on to a plate or board now and secure with double-sided taoe to stop it slipping around.
- Using a spoon or small spatula, press the cookie crumbs over the sides of your cake(s)
- randomly place the chocolate shards into the frosting in varying heights and groups to form the grass.
- put a few ‘clumps’ of grass on the top of the cake, as shown, for the ball to rest in.
- position the baseball in the grass clumps you created and secure with a dollop of buttercream.
- using a toothpick or skewer, draw the seam lines around your baseball.
- snip a small hole on the bottom corner of a Ziploc sandwich bag and add the red frosting
- pipe the stitching detail along the seam line you just made>
- snip the hole a little larger then use the same frosting to pipe a few fat beads of frosting about one inch long, directly on to the cake, to form the bug bodies. Add a large round bead of frosting next to each of these, to form the bug heads.
- snip a small hole on the bottom corner of a Ziploc sandwich bag and add the light brown frosting.
- pipe legs and antennae on each bug, as shown.

You're done! Now go get a well deserved cup of coffee and sit back for a few minutes to admire your handiwork. Remember to take a picture while your masterpiece still looks perfect.
