Birthday Cake!!!!

Hi, Well I am going to try to make my daughter's 4th birthday cake. This will be the first cake I have ever baked and decorated myself.

I was wondering if a box cake mix would be ok to use for a barbie cake(Barbie dress cake) and also what type of icing should i use?

I am going to decorate with a small star tip.I am thinking about trying a filling inside but I am not sure how many layers to do? Any advice would be helpful.

Hi KC,

A box mix is fine for your Barbie cake. Buttercream frosting is probably the easiest for a beginner to work with and will pipe beautifully with any star, round or petal tips you want to use.

As for number of layers, three or four would probably be the most you would want to do for a first cake. A filling will definitely improve the flavor of the cake. To keep it simple, you could use the same buttercream you're frosting the cake with and just mix in a cup or so of cookie crumbs to change up the flavor a little.
