black buttercream icing

I have now for the 2nd time tried to make black buttercream icing, but I seem to only be able to manage dark grey and that's after using a LOT of coloring, whereas for other colors I use just a tiny bit. What am I doing wrong?

Black Buttercream

Hi Hanne,

The easiest way to achieve a true black buttercream is to start with a dark chocolate buttercream and add a small amount of black paste food color.

I just add cocoa powder to basic buttercream until it's really chocolatey and dark brown, then I only need to add a very small amount of black coloring.

Remember that the color will darken after an hour or so. It never looks true black when you add the color - just a dark charcoal gray - but after a few hours it will be a gorgeous black, without the icky aftertaste from using all food color.

Try it. I think you'll like it!
