ingredients for a perfect Bob The Builder Cake
- Cake - Classic Moist Chocolate Cake is a perfect choice
- 1 batch of Chocolate Ganache
- Green candy melts
- Chocolate cookie crumbs (Oreos are good)
- 1 ziploc sandwich bag
- One brand new (or well cleaned) toy Bulldozer
- Cake plate or board large enough to display the finished cake
- Bob and Wendy – see instructions
first steps to a successful bob the builder cake
- bake the cakes in a mini muffin pan and cool completely.
- dip each mini cake in the chocolate ganache or frosting and cover completely.
- set them aside on some wax paper in the refrigerator to firm up.
making Chocolate Grass
- melt the candy melts in a microwave safe bowl for 30 seconds at a time, stirring after each interval, until completely melted.
- using the back of a spoon, smear some strips of melted chocolate about 1/8 inch thick on to a piece of wax paper, as shown (below left).
- let set for about 30 minutes then, using a large knife, cut randomly across the strip of chocolate to make small shards, as shown (below right). It’s that simple – now you have grass!

now for Bob And Wendy
- find images of Bob and Wendy from a favorite story book or on-line image search and print or color copy to about three inches high. Remember to reverse them as well so you have a double sided figure when you’re finished
- cut out and put the images for each figure back to back and glue together with a toothpick in between, making sure the toothpick extends about 1 ½ inches from the bottom of each figure
- use the toothpicks to insert the figures where you want them.
Bob The Builder Cake assembly
- spread the light brown frosting over 2/3 of your cake board in a freeform shape and press cookie crumbs into the frosting in a thick layer.
- position the bulldozer, securing it with a few dollops of frosting.
- pile up the chocolate ‘rocks’ in the bucket of the bulldozer and position Bob and Wendy on top, as shown.
- put some brown frosting in a Ziploc sandwich bag and snip a corner to form a small hole.
- pipe some blobs (very technical term there!) of frosting around the bulldozer tires and randomly on some of the rocks to hold the grass.
- position the chocolate shards into the frosting in varying heights and groups to form the grass.
- put some grass ‘clumps’ around the bottom of the tires, as shown, to add some detail to the scene.

You're done! Now go get a well deserved cup of coffee and sit back for a few minutes to admire your handiwork. Remember to take a picture while your masterpiece still looks perfect.
