Bowl Cake

How do I bake a cake in a bowl? Can I use a pyrex bowl or does it need to be a special type of bowl? How long do I bake it for?

Cooling & cake removal? NEW
by: Erin

Just wondering about the final (post-baking) steps for a cake baked in a bowl:
How long should you let the cake cool in the bowl before turning it out? I assume it should cool for a few minutes in the bowl then turned out to cool completely on a cooling rack.

Bowl Cakes

Hi Dawn,

You can use a Pyrex bowl for baking cakes. Even a small bowl cake takes about 50 minutes to bake, so don't be surprised if you're baking medium to large bowl cakes, to find that the baking time is well over an hour.

I like to check after 45 minutes, regardless of the size of the bowl, and them every 10-15 minutes until a cake tester comes out clean.

Make sure you grease the bowl well and add a circle of parchment paper that covers the bottom and part of the sides of the bowl. Just make snips in the circle all around, leaving a small area in the center that's uncut.

You can also wrap the bowl in wet towels to prevent the sides of the cake from over-baking, due to the longer baking times required for bowl cakes.

Good luck.
