buttercream frosting vs filling

My sisters have always done the decorating to perfection.none of them have used fondant or filling. they used the tips and bags. my nephew has recently engaged and to help them save money I would like to make their cake. I'm would like to do a trial run on this project.

Everyone always love the taste and moistness of my cakes and cupcakes, but now I would like to do more of the decorating for family events. My sisters have not decorated any cakes in years. I believe the last one was done for my baby shower almost 15 years ago.

This is going to probably sound stupid, but is buttercream frosting and filling the same thing?

Can I change the consistency of one to transform it into the other?

From the editor:

Buttercream filling and frosting are the same thing. You can use the same consistency to do both jobs.

You'll find lots of great recipes and decorating tips and tricks here. Take some time to look around.

Good luck!
