Cake filling

Do the buttercream filling recipes you provide need to be refrigerated? It's especially a hassle when I need to find room in the fridge for the cake and while traveling. Thanks!

I took the Wilton class. My instructor said not to refrigerate, but we did not use milk or real butter. Based on my food service experience, I would say that butter would be fine to leave out, especially when mixed with large amounts of sugar as in frosting, but not I am not so confident if milk is used.
