Chocolate Ganache

Okay, so I'm a novice at making Ganache. I wanted to make it to fill a 1/4 sheet cake.
I used the recipe from this site, but increased the quantities proportionally to 3 cups heavy whipping cream and 24 oz milk chocolate chips. I heated the cream in the microwave until it was hot (not boiling) and poured it over the chips. I let it stand for 3 minutes, then stirred until smooth.
I thought, from reading the recipe, that the mixture would just thicken up to create the ganache. After letting it sit for awhile and it didn't thicken, I put it in the refrigerator, but it still didn't thicken. So my husband suggested putting it in my mixer - and it whipped up nicely.
Is that what I was supposed to do? I didn't see anything on the recipe about mixing the chocolate chip/whipping cream mixture to make the ganache.
Thanks!
