ingredients for the perfect Dog Cake
- Cake - Lemon Ginger Pound Cake is perfect.
- Filling - Gingernut Crunch is fabulous.
- 1 batch of buttercream.
- sky blue, yellow, red and black gel food color
- A black candywriter
- Yellow candy melts
- disposable decorating bags
- #5 Round and #18 Star tips
- Cake plate or board large enough to display the finished cake.
- one regular sized ice-cream scoop and one smaller ice-cream scoop.
first steps to a successful dog birthday cake
- bake the cakes and cool completely.
- level the cakes and split each into two layers horizontally.
- fill and assemble each cake on a separate cake circle
and secure with a dollop of frosting to stop it from sliding around.
- add a crumb coat - this is a very thin coat of un-tinted frosting you apply to 'set' the crumbs.
- refrigerate the cake(s) for at least one hour.
...and now for the star of your dog birthday cake
You mix cake scraps and butterceam and mold them to shape. It's just like play dough for grown-ups!
- mix some cake scraps and buttercream and smoosh them into the larger ice-cream scoop (very technical term there!).
- repeat with the smaller ice-cream scoop. Pinch in the sides a little to elongate the shape and add some extra on top to form a snout.
- put the two shapes on to some wax paper and use buttercream to join them. This will form the body and head.
- Add a basically rectangular piece to the opposite end from the head. This will be the paws.
- cover Snoopy completely with white buttercream.
- set Snoopy in the fridge to allow the buttercream to firm up while you assemble the rest of the cake.
make The woodstock characters for your dog birthday cake
- print out the woodstock picture below to use as a template or freehand your own design.
- Tape tp a hard work surface and cover with a sheet of wax or parchmane paper.
- melt about 1 cup of candy melts in a microwave safe bowl for 30 seconds, stir and repeat until completely melted and smooth.
- using the tip of paintbrush handle smear the melted chocolate to about 1/8" thick to fill in the woodstock shape.
- repeat this as many times as needed for the humber of woodstocks you need.
- let set for about 30 minutes then carefully peel each woodstock off the wax paper.
- Fill in the outline and details with your black candywriter.

Dog Birthday Cake assembly
- divide the remaining buttercream in to six bowls, with 1/4 cup or so in three bowlse, 1 cup in another and the remainder split evenly.
- Tint the 1/4 cup bowls red, yellow and black. Leave the 1 cup white and tint the other two light blue and green.
- frost the bottom tier all over with green buttercream.
- frost the top tier all over with blue buttercream.
- Secure the bottom tier to a plate or board with frosting or deouble-sided tape and stack the smaller tier on top (secured with frosting).
- Pipe a border around both tiers with a #18 tip and white buttercream.
- Pipe a row of small dots around the top edge of the bottom tier, alternating red and black (use #5 tip or ziploc bag with small hole snipped in it).
- Pipe some clouds around the side of the top tier with a #5 tip (or siploc bag, see above).
- Place Snoopy on top of the cake and pipe some ears, claws, nose, eyes and mouth details in black buttercream.
- Finish with a collar in red buttercream!
- Add woodstock characters around the side of the bottom tier. Secure with buttercream.
You're done! Now go get a well deserved cup of coffee and sit back for a few minutes to admire your handiwork. Remember to take a picture while your masterpiece still looks perfect.
