Fairy Birthday Cake

The Fairy Birthday Cake itself is one of my homemade vanilla sponge cakes filled with homemade vanilla buttercream and raspberry jam. My most popular order! It's a 6" round cake and it's 3" deep.
This Fairy Cake was for a friends daughters 1st birthday. The name 'Frankle Further' which is piped on the cake is a nick name for her daughter whose real name is Frankie!
My friend just wanted something girly and mentioned princesses and fairies then left the rest up to me, so I decided to do a flower fairy design with a little crown on the fairy to suggest a fairy princess!
The colors pink, lilac and yellow I think always work well on any cake that you are decorating for a girl so I stuck with this color theme for the cake.
The cake is covered in fondant (sugarpaste) and the fairy and flowers are also all made from sugarpaste, with a little gum tragacanth added to the sugarpaste of the fairy to ensure she maintained her shape!
The fairy is sitting on a large yellow flower and is, as you can see, surrounded by smaller flowers.
After the cake was baked and had cooled, it took me 2 hours and 30 minutes to complete the decoration of the cake.
To finish it off I piped the message as requested by my friend 'Happy 1st Birthday Frankle Furter' with white royal icing.
The reaction from my friend and her family was very enthusiastic. They loved it. And that is exactly why I do this for a living as you can't beat the feeling of seeing someone, especially children, so happy as a result of something you have lovingly created for them! Its the best job in the world!
I really hope you like this design and enjoy recreating it for yourself.
I started decorating cakes as a hobby just over 2 years ago. When I first started I used to buy all the cakes ready made as my first passion was not for cooking the cakes but just decorating them. This is because ever since I can remember I have been creative and love to paint, draw, model things etc, so decorating cakes was the perfect way for me to use my creative talents to invest a little time into someone I cared about and present them with a personalized cake for their special occasion. The result was my friends and family loved receiving a cake from me and the sentiment of me spending time decorating the cakes was worth more to them than a present brought from a shop.
So it got to a point where I didn't want to do anything else but design and decorate cakes so in August 2008 I took a massive leap of faith, quit my job as a manager in a building society and decided to pursue a full time career in cake making and decorating.
So, here I am 2 months on and I have now set up my own business from home making and decorating cakes. YES! I actually make the cakes as well now as I want the whole creation to be my own and I love it!
I have also been extremely lucky to secure a part time position at my local cake maker and decorators shop 5 minutes from my home and I am learning so much from them and love the time I spend there. So, 2 days a week I work for the shop completing orders for them and the rest of the week I work from home completing my own orders for friends and family.
