baking

- bake the cakes and cool completely.
- level the cakes and split each into two layers horizontally.
- fill and assemble each cake on a separate cake circle
and secure with a dollop of frosting to stop it from sliding around.
- add a crumb coat - this is a very thin coat of un-tinted frosting you apply to 'set' the crumbs.
- refrigerate the cake(s) for an hour or so to let the crumb coat set.
Assembly

- frost the sides of your cake(s) with the lime green and medium green frosting, working from medium green at the bottom edge up to lime green at the top edge, as shown.
- frost the top of your cake(s) with the lime green frosting.
- using a spatula and piping bag, fill the bag 2/3 full with orange frosting on one side of the bag and yellow on the other.
- using the #366 tip with the narrow end at 12 o’clock, pipe an uneven number of large sunflower petals (about 11 or so), leaving a small circular area where they meet to form the flower center.
- pipe a second row of petals on top of the first, staggering the placement of the petals.
- using the brown frosting and a Ziploc bag (small hole snipped in one corner), fill the flower center with small beads of frosting in a circular pattern.
- repeat for each sunflower, placing an uneven number on the top and sides and allowing the flowers on the sides to continue up over the top edge, as shown.
- using the darker green frosting and #199 star tip, pipe stems and leaves for the sunflowers winding between the flowers for a more interesting effect.
- carefully place your cake(s) in the terra cotta saucer and fill around the cake with the cookie crumbs, as shown.
