how do I stop crumbs from getting in my icing?

by Kim

I end up getting cake crumbs in my icing especially after
I level the cake or add filling into it. There are times where I use buttercream for the outside instead of fondant and I get crumbs in the icing!!! UGH!!

How do I prevent this?

Also is there a good technique for getting the cake straight or level?

From the editor:

Hi Kim,

Check out these two tutorials:

1. For crumb-free frostings, you'll need how to crumb coat a cake, and

2. For a perfectly level cake every time, take a look at splitting cake layers. You use the same technique to level a cake and split into layers for filling.

Good luck.
