How do I use cake dowels to support tiers

by Ali

I am making a Spongebob theme cake for my nephew's birthday. I want to make two round tiers with a small pineapple on top. I want to make sure it is properly supported, so what do I need to do to insure this?

Placing Cake Dowels
by: Michelle (editor)

Hi Ali,

Make sure to use about 5-7 1/4" cake dowels, spaced evenly around the bottom tier. Place the dowels so that they will be just inside the area where the top tier will sit.

Place about 3 dowels under where the pineapple will sit and finish by pushing one dowel through the center of the finished cake, from top to bottom. Sharpen the end so that it also goes into the cake board a little. This will give you a lot of stability, especially if you have to transport the cake at all.

Regards,
