Hi Jill,

Absolutely, in fact I recommend you make it at least the day before to give you plenty of time to refrigerate the cake between steps.

Here's what I usually do:
bake & cool
refrigerate for at least an hour or so
split the cake and fill between layers
refrigerate an hour or so
crumb coat
refrigerate overnight or at least a few hours
top coat and decorate

This gives the cake time to firm up so the filling won't bulge out underneath the frosting and spoil all your hard work.
