how long will buttercream keep?

About how long will the basic recipe buttercream last, most say about 2 weeks is that true? Also does the icing need to be refrigerated as well as the cupcake or cakes after it's been iced?
From the editor:
Buttercream will keep in the fridge for up to 2 weeks, or the freezer for up to two months. You can store the frosted cakes at room temperature for up to 48 hours or in the refrigerator. If you refrigerate the finished cakes, just remember to bring them to room temperature before serving.
