How to stack layers?

Hello! I am doing just a two tiered cake and wanted to know if I should just stack the top layer right on the bottom layer or if it is best to keep a cake circle in between? If you use a cake circle do I need to insert straws in the bottom layer or is that just for cakes with three or more layers?

First, layers and tiers are different things. Normally you would bake two layers of cake and put them together for form a tier. So you should probably put some kind of cake filling or icing between those two cake layers and frost your cake. If you are adding an additional tier on top, like a smaller size tier, then you would put that tier on a cake board and use dowels or straws to support the top tier....I hope I explained this well.
