I need Australian substitutions for buttercream ingredients
by kylie
(nsw australia)
I've been reading some recipes on buttercream icing. I've had a few from the United States give me recipes and I'm trying to work out what the ingredients are for here in Australia.
I just want an easy, basic recipe. I just use Betty Crocker frosting now, but I'm wondering what is powdered sugar? Is that icing sugar?
From the editor:
Hi Kylie,
Here's a few quick translations/substitutions for you:
powdered sugar = icing sugar
shortening = copha
1 stick butter = 113.5 grams
Here's my favorite quick buttercream recipe:
3 sticks butter
5-7 cups powderd sugar
1/2 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
about 1/4 cup milk
1. In the bowl of a stand mixer, using the paddle attachment, beat butter until lighter in color, soft and fluffy
2. add 3/4 of the powdered sugar and beat until fully incorporated with butter
3. add vanilla and a splash of milk and mix until smooth and fully incorporated.
4. adjust consistency of buttercream by adding more powdered sugar or more milk, until you're happy with the result.
Good luck.
