Sand
by: Marie

I just completed a beach cake for a 9 year old.

Where I wanted the sand to go, I spread some butter icing, then sprinkled a mixture of graham wafer crumbs and brown sugar.

Cookie Crumb 'Sand'
by: Michelle (admin)

There are several good ways to make a 'sand' finish for your cakes:

1. crumble vanilla cookies (like Nilla Wafers or similar) in the food processor until fine crumbs.

2. crumble ginger snap cookies in the food processor until finely crumbled and mix with brown sugar.

3. combine brown sugar and chopped peanuts (or any other light colored nut like cashews etc.) and pulse in the food processor until finely crumbled.

For the sides of a cake you can the apply crumbs over buttercream (or whatever type of frosting you're using), to keep them in place. For around the base of a cake, you can just sprinkle the crumbs directly onto the cake board.
