Matching filling with frosting

I am going to be baking and decorating a birthday cake for my SIL and can't find any information on fillings. I will be baking a white, 2 layer cake, and making buttercream icing. However, I don't want the whole thing to be ALL buttercream icing (icing in the middle AND on top?). So I was wondering about fillings: what goes good with white cake?, what is a good match for buttercream icing?, what about fruits in the middle (can't do strawberry)?.
