Monkey Cake

I made this Monkey Cake for my daughter's teacher. She loves monkeys and is having her first baby in April.
I really wanted her baby shower cake to be special. So I designed a cake with a jungle theme feel, but kept it a little more modern with the dots in the colors of her baby shower.
I used my own white cake recipe. The cake was iced and filled with buttercream, and I used marshmallow fondant to cover it.
This was the second time I had ever used fondant on a cake. And I must say the MM fondant was much easier to work with than the store bought fondant. It tasted better too!!
The cake is made using a 10" round pan and a 14" round pan. I made the monkeys in the middle by covering the Wilton globe pillar set with MM fondant. I also made the dots around the cake, monkey, bananas, and palm tree on the top of the cake from MM fondant.
I made the palm tree a week ahead of time. The actual baking and decorating took approximately 15 hours to complete.
I have been making and decorating cakes since I was 13. My friends still laugh that I got my first stand-up Kitchen aid when I was 13, because I burned up my Mom's hand mixer making cakes!
From the editor:
What an adorable Monkey Cake. It's perfect for any jungle themed event, whether it's a baby shower, birthday party or just because.
And don't forget to pick up some cute, co-ordinating party supplies
