making a head for your Power Rangers Cake
Now we get to have some real fun. Once you've learned this simple food modelling technique, the possibilities are endless.
mix up this easy rice krispie play dough recipe:
- 3 tablespoons butter or margarine
- 4 cups mini or regular marshmallows
- 6 cups rice krispies cereal, or similar (Rice Bubbles etc.)
- in a microwave safe bowl, heat marshmallows and butter until smooth and melted – about three minutes, stirring after two minutes.
- add rice krispies and mix until well coated with marshmallow butter mixture.
- let sit for about 20-30 minutes until set a little and a handful will hold its shape.
- take some rice krispie play dough and squeeze into an egg shape about 9” high to form the head.
- make a cylinder shape about 3 ˝" wide x 3" tall for the neck (above, left). Let these set completely.
- cut a piece of skewer about 6" long and insert into the neck (above, center).
- push the head on to the skewer until it touches the neck (above, right).
- melt the white candy melts in a small microwave-safe bowl for 30 seconds, stir and repeat until smooth and liquid.
- add royal blue candy color a drop at a time and stir, repeating until you reach desired shade.
- using the back of a small spoon, coat the head with the melted chocolate from top to bottom on one side and let set for 10 minutes. Repeat for the other side.
- When the chocolate is set, cut 2 x 5” lengths of skewer and insert them about 1 ˝” deep into the neck. These will hold the head in place on the body.

Power Rangers cake assembly
This is where we add the details that bring out your super hero's true power!
- divide the buttercream in to three bowls, with abround 1/2 cup in one, 1 cup in another and the remainder in the third bowl.
- Tint the 1/2 cup bowl black, leave the 1 cup bowl white and tint the remaining one royal blue.
- frost your Power Rangers cake all over with blue buttercream (below, left).
- using a toothpick, draw the lines for the shoulder decoration on the Power Ranger's suit. Better to mess up now with a toothpick than later with buttercream!
- using the white buttercream and a gallon Ziploc bag or a disposable piping bag fitted with a #12 round tip, fill in the lines you just made with the toothpick (below, right).
- add the decal on the front of the suit using the white and black buttercream and a #4 round decorating tip (below, right)
- use a spoon to scoop out an area about 1 ˝” deep for the neck to rest in (below, right).
- push the head into the body until the neck is sitting firmly in the area you just scooped out.
- draw in the details of the mask with toothpicks, just as you did for the body.
- using the white buttercream and a gallon Ziploc bag or a disposable piping bag fitted with a #4 round tip, go over those lines you just made with the toothpick that , making sure to add a line of buttercream around the base of the neck where it joins the body.
- fill in the black area of the eyes using black buttercream and a Ziploc sandwich bag with a hole snipped in one corner.
- using a small spatula, spread some blue buttercream around the cake board, coming right up to the edges of the cake.
