Pricing Cakes

I have been making and decorating cakes for about 10 years now..but in the last 3 or 4 people have ordered cakes from me.

With friends I usually do it for free, but my husband says that I need to charge. I started charging for materials only but a lot of my friends are saying it is not enough.

How do you know what your work is worth? I am not a professional and it is hard for me to judge.

Hi Stacey,

I can completely relate to your dilemma. Pricing can be difficult, especially in the beginning. A good idea is to see what bakeries in your area are charging for similar work and price about the same, if you can.

Set yourself a minimum price to cover ingredients, plus a little for your time, and work from there. If people are seeking you out to make their cakes, they will be happy to pay a fair price for them.
