problem with fondant drying and cracking
by Sandy

Hi,
I'm trying to cover RKT cars and trucks for a birthday cake and the fondant is drying before I can get them covered. The ones I've gotten covered have started to crack. Is there something I can do to prevent this. The fondant I'm using is the boxed Wilton fondant, I really don't have time to make my own. Any help with this would be appreciated.

Hi Sandy,
Here's a couple of tips that may help:
1. Try rolling out the fondant between two sheets of parchment paper. This allows you to not use any powdered sugar, which can help prevent the fondant from drying out.
2. Make sure to really knead the fondant well. You can pop it in the microwave to soften it a little to get started, about 10 seconds is good.
3. Smooth a little shortening into the areas that are cracking. This can help repair cracks you already have.
Good luck.
