Refrigerate cupcakes?

If I fill my cupcakes with your basic cream cheese filling recipe, do I need to refrigerate my cupcakes until ready to serve?

Officially, you should refrigerate any cake filled with a cream cheese filling. Unofficially, I have never had a problem as long as the cake is served within 6-8 hours and stored at cool room temperature.
