Lego Star Wars R2D2

Lego Star Wars R2D2

My son has been obsessed with Star Wars (specifically Lego Star Wars) for months so a Star Wars Cake for his birthday theme was a no brainer. I have always made his cakes, but b/c I'm back in school, I coach, and he was gearing up for some medical tests I needed something fun, but simple.

The Lego blocks are chocolate sour cream layer cake. I baked it in a 9x13 and then cut it in thirds and stacking them like 3 blocks. It is iced in a simple buttercream tinted with paste coloring. I just swirled icing into dots on top to make them look like Legos.

R2D2 is made of rice krispie 'dough' and frosted in the leftover buttercream. I used a large yogurt container (sprayed with cooking spray) to mold most of his body and topped with an extra mound of dough. His legs were shaped by hand and attached with extra icing. I also used a small disc of krispies that was smaller than the rest of the body to slightly elevate the body.

My son LOVED it and everyone was impressed!

From the editor:
Modeling with Rice Krispie 'play dough' is a super fun and very versatile decorating technique to have in your repertoire.

You can find the recipe for the 'play dough' and see the technique in action in these other great theme cakes:

Great cake Brooke, thanks.
