Topsy turvy Cake

I am going to attempt my first topsy turvy cake (2 tiers only).
For the bottom tier I will be using a 12", 11" and 10" cakes and the upper tier, 10", 9" and 8". My question, when stacking the cakes do I use cake circles between the layers or should I put all the cakes one on top of the other? Should I use dowels to anchor the cakes? What do you suggest?
