Topsy turvy Cake

I am going to attempt my first topsy turvy cake (2 tiers only).
For the bottom tier I will be using a 12", 11" and 10" cakes and the upper tier, 10", 9" and 8". My question, when stacking the cakes do I use cake circles between the layers or should I put all the cakes one on top of the other? Should I use dowels to anchor the cakes? What do you suggest?

I would definitely use dowels to add support between the tiers and one large dowel through the middle of the finished cake, from top to bottom. Depending on how many layers each tier will be, I would also place a cake round at the half way point in each tier, for extra support.
