Train Cake For Son's Birthday

by Pye

We are making a cake for a 2 yr old's birthday. He's crazy about trains, so we're going to make him a cake with the train cake pan. However, there will be many guests at his party, and we want to place the train atop a half-sheet cake. Can we put filling between the train, which is smaller, and the sheet cake? How would we do this? We'd love you input!

Cake Filling Ideas

Hi Pye,

In answer to your question about filling between a larger and a smaller cake:

It's not so much that you'd be using filling between the cakes - more like using frosting as glue to position the train cake on the sheet cake.

If you're feeling confident you could slice the un-frosted train cake in to horizontal layers and fill between them before re-assembling and frosting. Any kind of buttercream will work really well for this. Try this cookies & cream filling recipe.

Here's a quick idea for some added detail and fun:

make railroad tracks from thick black licorice and fill between the tracks with ginger snap (or similar) cookie crumb 'dirt'. Place the train cake on top and use a #234 large grass tip to add grass around the remaining top and sides of the sheet cake. Easy and fun!

Good luck!
