what did i do wrong

I made a cake with a cake mix. I criscoed and floured the pan and baked as usual. I let the cake cool then inverted it on to a board.

I didn't get to decorate it right away. I made the buttercream then iced it with different star tips.

After it was done we went to cut into it later that night and the frosting came off in chunks - it just fell off the cake. It got really hard. I don't know what happened. I don't want this to happen to my customers cakes.

Please help what did I do wrong???

Hi Carol,

You didn't mention this either way, but the only thing I can think of is that you possibly missed a crumb coat and the frosting attached itself to the crumbs rather than the body of the cake so it didn't have a good hold.

If you're not familiar with crumb coating, watch that'll show you how to do it.
